Evaluation 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Masthead

Above is my two mastheads for both of my magazines. Looking at my layout my mastheads are very different, my preliminary masthead (top picture) the font is very formal and professional how the masthead is in a neat row for the type of magazine it is meant for. Compared to to the second picture of the masthead, you can see I have learnt to adapt the masthead to the type of magazine it is for. The masthead sits behind the cover image to bring attention to the background image, because people will recognize the masthead as their house style unlike the preliminary masthead. The preliminary masthead is much more plain and dull to suit a school magazine, while my main task in more fitted to the magazine, with the rough look to make the magazine be more appealing as the music genre isn't considered perfect, I used bold capitals on both magazine, but on my main task the masthead seems more dominates because it's in black and is bold. I used a different type of shadow underneath the masthead on my main task to empathize the words.

Front Cover Image

There are drastic differences between the two cover images. The preliminary image is taken in a different way such as a school environment, while the main task cover image is taken with a white backdrop to give of the effect of a real photo shoot has occurred. Looking at the preliminary task the colours of the image is a contrast of blue's to connect to the magazine colour scheme with pale surrounding colours to make the magazine seem prim and proper. On the other hand the main task colours consist of a black and white filter image to give off a vintage effect, to also exaggerate her black clothing to show the style of magazine to make it more effective. The position of how the image is taken is different, the preliminary image is taken side on to show a moving image of a student doing their work. As for the main task the image is taken from a long shot to show her clothing while being close enough to show the models expression. The main task cover image is more effective because it lets the audience see the full length of the model front first so we get to see the model itself and this creates a much more intriguing image for the audience.

Layouts of the Contents Page

The layouts of both of my magazines are very different. My preliminary contents page is much more suitable for a school magazine, it is simple and plain. The images I used effectively address the audience as they have connection to the copy on the contents and people will recognize what is in the images and can relate to it. My contents page for my main task is much more funky and fun, I decided to have a lot of copy for the features and extra's because I wanted their to be more for the audience to want to read and because my target audience is for 20 years and older therefore they care more about the feature stories than lots of added images, this was effective because it creates focus on the writing while I added a few images just to give the readers an insight into the magazine. For my preliminary contents I had less writing and focused more on the images because the age group for the magazine like to look at pictures more.

Font used on Front Cover

Looking back at my preliminary task I used the same font throughout on the cover, this wasn't very effective because it was competitive and boring. None of the copy stood out more than the other to draw attention to each of the news lines. I chose a range from white, yellows and oranges for the font to connect to the school logo.
My main task font on the front cover has a range of different fonts to empathize each news line to make parts stand out more to the audience. I chose a range of colours from my main tasks colour scheme for the font and outlined some of the headlines to empathize the writing, to show the important parts of the magazine. I went with normal conventions of a magazine by using some black and white font because of my background colours to make the pop out of the page. I used other colours for my font because they go with my genre of music, as the music can be creative and fun.

Texts on Contents Pages

My preliminary task contents font is very simple in white font on a blue background, this is easy to read for the target audience of the magazine. I simply called the contents 'contents' to go with the boring magazine, while on my main task I included 'CONTENTS' but added 'INSPIRE MONTHLY ISSUE' to make the writing less formal. My contents is presented different I used bigger font on the main task to attract the attention of the audience to the writing. I presented the page numbers more clearly and fun on my main task to make it easier for the audience to navigate around the magazine, this is effective because the yellow contrasts with the surrounding colours to draw attentions to them. I included pictures in my main tasks but not highlighted them like I did in my preliminary task to make the images important but not dominate the contents page. I used pictures to link to the features and extra's on my main task contents to intrigue the audience. The preliminary task which has small font making it harder to read and attracting the attention to the images which is less effective. I learnt in the process of making my final piece that I wanted the font to be equally as important to suit the type of magazine I was constructing. So when it came to my final piece I used larger font and made the page numbers and didn't highlight the photo's as much to make the contents work better and more effective.
